Calculate your grade
A grade calculator turns your scores into answers: your average so far, the final exam score you need, or your semester GPA. Pick the tab that matches your question — the result updates as you type.
Weighted Grade Calculator
Enter each assignment with its score and weight (%). Incomplete weights are shown, never ignored.
Advanced options (optional)
Custom boundaries shared across all tabs. Ranges must not overlap.
Set a Category on each assignment, then weight each category (% of course, must total 100%).
Points-Based Grade Calculator
Enter earned and possible points. No weights needed.
Advanced options (optional)
The global grading scale in Weighted → Advanced options applies here too.
Final Exam Grade Calculator
Find what you need on the final to reach your target.
What-If Grade Simulator
Your actual grades stay untouched. Hypothetical rows are highlighted and included in the projection. Hypothetical rows update the projection immediately.
Advanced: compare future exam scores (optional)
| If you score | Overall | Letter |
|---|---|---|
| Enter a weight and scores to compare hypotheticals. | ||
GPA Calculator
Add courses with grade and credit hours. GPA is credit-weighted.
Letter Grade Converter
Convert a percentage to a letter grade with a standard or custom scale.
Custom scale editor
Define letter, min %, max %. Ranges must not overlap.
How it works
1. Pick the tab that fits your question
Weighted for courses with differently-weighted work, Points-Based for total-points courses, Final Exam for target planning, What-If for scenarios, GPA for your semester average, Letter for converting a percentage.
2. Enter your scores
Add one row per assignment, course, or exam. Weights should total 100% — anything missing is flagged in plain language, never silently dropped. Optional extras like dropping the lowest score live under Advanced options.
3. Read your result
The big number is your answer; the pills show the letter grade, GPA equivalent, and status. The breakdown table plus the explanation box show exactly how the number was computed, so you can check the math yourself.
What each calculator does
Weighted Grade Calculator
For courses where homework, quizzes, and exams count differently. Enter each score with its weight (for example homework 20%, midterm 30%). You get your current average, completed and remaining weight, and the overall if missing work counted as zero.
Grade Percentage Calculator
The points-based mode for courses graded on total points. Enter earned and possible points per item — no weights needed. The tool totals everything, gives the percentage, and converts it to a letter grade.
Final Exam Calculator
Answers “what grade do I need on my final?” Enter your current average, the final’s weight, and your target. You get the required score, whether it is achievable, your maximum possible grade, and the minimum score to pass.
What-if simulator
Test hypothetical scores without touching your real grades. Actual rows stay solid while hypothetical rows are marked, and you can save scenarios or compare several future exam scores side by side.
GPA Calculator
Your semester average across courses. Enter each course’s letter grade and credit hours — harder-working courses (more credits) pull more weight. Supports 4.0 and 5.0 scales and shows total credits.
Letter Grade Calculator
Converts any percentage to a letter grade on the US standard scale, a simple 10-point scale, or your own custom boundaries, and shows pass or fail against the threshold you set.
How to calculate grades
Most courses use one of three systems: weighted categories, total points, or a final exam that decides part of the grade. The method below each result explains which one was used, so you always know what the number means.
Formulas this calculator uses
Weighted: G = Σ(score % × weight) ÷ Σ(completed weights)
Overall with final: overall = current × (1 − w) + final × w
Required final: required = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w
Needed on remaining work: needed = (target × 100 − earned) ÷ remaining
GPA: GPA = Σ(points × credits) ÷ Σ(credits)
Comparisons use unrounded values; display is rounded to two decimals. Scores above 100% count as extra credit and are flagged.
Weighted grade calculations
Each score is converted to a percentage, multiplied by its weight, and the total is divided by the weight completed so far. Example: 85/100 (85%) worth 20% plus 72/80 (90%) worth 30% gives (85 × 20 + 90 × 30) ÷ 50 = 88.00% on 50% completed weight.
Points-based grading
Simpler: add up all earned points, divide by all possible points, multiply by 100. Example: 18/20 + 42/50 + 9/10 = 69 ÷ 80 = 86.25%. No weights — a 50-point test automatically counts five times more than a 10-point quiz.
Current grade vs projected grade
Your current average covers only finished work (88.00% above). Your projected overall counts unfinished work as zero (44.00% in the same example). Both numbers are shown because they answer different questions: “how am I doing?” versus “where do I stand for the whole course?”
Incomplete coursework
When weights total less than 100%, the calculator reports completed weight, remaining weight, and both averages instead of guessing. Optionally tick “normalize” to rescale to finished work only, use the planner to see the average you need on what remains, or test outcomes in the What-If tab.
Common grading scales
| Letter | Standard range |
|---|---|
| A | 93–100% |
| A− | 90–92.99% |
| B+ | 87–89.99% |
| B | 83–86.99% |
| B− | 80–82.99% |
| C+ | 77–79.99% |
| C | 73–76.99% |
| C− | 70–72.99% |
| D+ | 67–69.99% |
| D | 63–66.99% |
| D− | 60–62.99% |
| F | Below 60% |
Schools differ — many use a simple 10-point scale (A 90+, B 80+, C 70+, D 60+). Set the scale once under Advanced options and every tab uses it; or define fully custom boundaries in the Letter tab. Overlapping ranges are rejected and gaps are flagged.
How to calculate the grade you need on a final exam
Rearrange the overall formula to solve for the final: required = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w. With an 85% average, a 30% final, and an 80% target: (80 − 85 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = 68.33% needed — achievable. Aiming for 90% would need 101.67%, which the calculator marks impossible and counters with your maximum possible grade (89.50%).
Letter grades and GPA conversion
A percentage becomes a letter through your scale (86.25% is a B on the standard scale). Each letter maps to grade points — A = 4.0, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0 on a 4.0 scale — and GPA weights those points by credit hours. Example: A × 3cr + B × 4cr + C+ × 3cr = 30.9 ÷ 10 credits = 3.09 GPA. Weighted 5.0 scales work the same way with higher point values.
Example calculations
Weighted average with unfinished work
Homework 85/100 × 20% + Midterm 72/80 (90%) × 30% on 50% completed weight = (1700 + 2700) ÷ 50 = 88.00% current average, 50% remaining, 44.00% projected overall. Try it in the Weighted tab.
Final exam needed
Current 85%, final worth 30%, target 80% → (80 − 59.5) ÷ 0.3 = 68.33% needed. Target 90% would need 101.67% — impossible at a 100% max, with 89.50% the highest reachable grade.
GPA across courses
A (4.0) × 3cr + B (3.0) × 4cr + C+ (2.3) × 3cr = 30.9 quality points ÷ 10 credits = 3.09 GPA. Heavier courses move the result more — that is why credits matter.
Frequently asked questions
Open the Final Exam tab and enter your current average, the final’s weight, and your target grade. The calculator tells you the exact score you need, whether it is achievable, your maximum possible grade, and the minimum score to pass your threshold.
In the Weighted tab, add one row per assignment with its score and weight. Your current average is earned weighted points divided by completed weight — for example (85 × 20 + 90 × 30) ÷ 50 = 88.00%. Remaining weight is shown separately.
No. The calculator shows completed weight, remaining weight, your current average (finished work only), and your projected overall (missing work as zero). Add the missing assignments, tick “normalize,” or use the improvement planner to see what you need on the rest.
Current average covers finished work only; projected overall counts unfinished weight as zero. If you have 88% on half the course, your current average is 88% but your projected overall is 44% — both are correct answers to different questions.
Each letter grade maps to points (A = 4.0, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0 on a 4.0 scale). GPA is total quality points times credits divided by total credits. A 4-credit B moves your GPA more than a 3-credit A. The GPA tab supports 4.0 and 5.0 scales.
Use whatever your course syllabus specifies. Start with the US standard scale (A at 93+) or the simple 10-point scale (A at 90+), or define your own boundaries in the Letter tab — overlaps are rejected and gaps flagged. One setting under Advanced options applies the scale to every tab.
Yes, both are optional settings. Set “drop lowest N” to exclude your weakest scores — dropped rows are dimmed and named. Enable extra-credit rows for bonus work, which adds points on top without changing your normal weights. Curves are also available but never applied unless you choose one.
In the What-If tab, add hypothetical scores alongside your actual grades — hypotheticals are highlighted and your real entries stay untouched. Save named scenarios to compare them, or enter several future exam scores to see every resulting overall grade in a table.
Usually rounding, a different scale, or a dropped assignment your portal handles differently. Check that your weights total 100%, that both use the same letter boundaries, and whether your instructor drops the lowest score. This calculator shows unrounded comparisons with two-decimal display so you can spot the difference.
Yes. Everything runs in your browser — no account, no database, nothing sent to a server. Saving is optional and uses only your own browser storage, which you can delete at any time with “Delete saved.”
